YouTube gives worldwide publicity to Free-hug campaign

Have you heard about “Free-hug campaign”? This video clip above was posted on YouTube on September 22, 2006, and it made an instant sensation around the world. Less than a week after the posting on this video sharing website, this campaign even drew an attention of national television in the States. Free-hug movement is even happening in Korea now! Considering the fact that Juan Mann, initiator of this free hugs, started this cuddling campaign long before in 2003, the effect of the new media on the Web is beyond amazement. Look at the record of view. By 2 am today, it had more than 4 million hits and 100 thousand comments!

What can be more powerful media than this? It might be a good idea for non-profit organization to utilize such website as YouTube to promote their campaign. And it’s even FREE! Will there be any problem or concern, though, when an organization, not an individual, use such website? Do you know any other website that draws attention all around the global?

I don’t know how successful using YouTube would be for an organization unless it was an organization that appealed greatly to people who regularly visit YouTube. I know I only use YouTube to find things that someone told me about, so I rarely go to their web site. If an organization wanted to start using YouTube for a campaign, that organization would have to have a campaign that interests habitual users of YouTube. Slowly awareness of the campaign would grow as people tell their friends about the video on YouTube, but it will take a while for YouTube to catch on as a campaigning tool for organizations.

There is one problem. If more and more organizations start using YouTube, it may not be free anymore. Who ever runs the web site may catch on to what the organizations are doing and start to charge people to post their videos. This would ruin the point of YouTube. I think if a few organizations used YouTube for campaigns it would not be a problem, but if a lot of organizations start using YouTube to campaign, issues may arise.
