Concentrating the potential of inside
While we tend to think of making relationship outwards, I think this article "Sleepwalking Through the Workday" reminds us of the importance of the internal communication. It is the part that can be easily ignored, but actually is something that should be regarded as the first and foremost step.
Everyone is looking for a better job paying more money, and ready to move whenever the offer comes in these days. Therefore, it is getting harder to concentrate on the employee’s potential, as seen in the survey of the article.
In addition to the productivity problem, however, the reason why this is important is that because anyone of a company can be seen as a representative of it from outside. Also, it is pretty sure that the “word-of-mouth” has a great power in the reality. Imagine, if an employee speaks ill of his/her company, it will make the image of the company worse than anything else to other people who are not relevant.
But still, many employers think investing in making internal communication program does not help them make visible profit. So, isn’t it the employers who should be changed first?

That is a very important issue, and a good point, a company’s best public relations can come from the inside out, instead of being externally focused. Internal communication can make employees feel pride in their work and in the company. By feeling connected to the overall picture, employees will not be just a cog in the wheel anymore, and feel like a value contributing force to the organization’s success. Internal communication of who is doing what, and positive things that individuals are doing in and outside of the workplace, can help change the effort that employees put in on a daily basis. An employer should have “a symmetrical worldview that values dialogue and two-sided input. Teamwork is valued, and emphasis is placed on the collective rather than the individual, meaning that that the organization and employees share goals” (Cutlip pg. 228). Employers have a responsibility as leaders within the organization to communicate to their employees. In the long run employees will be more productive, efficient, and are more likely to be loyal, which will save money in the long run. Also, word of mouth communication from the employees to their respective social groups should not be underestimated, and good internal communication will make this positive, and not negative.
